Vegetarian Nutrition Counseling

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has affirmed that a vegetarian diet can meet all known nutrient needs of people of all ages, including children, teenagers, and pregnant or breast-feeding women.
Vegetarianism is a diet of foods derived from plants, with or without dairy products, eggs and/or honey. Vegetarians easily meet their protein needs by eating a varied diet, providing they consume enough nutritional calories to maintain proper weight. Proteins consumed throughout the day can provide enough essential amino acids for nutritional balance.

Well planned vegetarian diets can be healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in prevention and treatment of certain diseases, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The results of an evidence based review indicated that vegetarians appear to have lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and lower rates of type 2 diabetes than nonvegetarians. Additional health benefits appear to be a lower body mass index (BMI) and overall cancer rate.

Protein, calcium, iron and Vitamin B12 are essential to the vegetarian diet. Fairfax Dietetics will make an individual assessment of your diet and work with you on developing a balanced vegetarian program that you will enjoy! We'll educate you about food sources for specific nutrients and dietary modifications to meet any particular needs. We have experience with all types of vegetarian diets including vegan.
