Nutritional Grocery Shopping Tours

Groups and individuals..Ready To Shop? Decisions about healthy eating start in the aisles of the grocery store. Don't dread going to the grocery store and being overwhelmed by the large quantity of food products and confusing health claims on the labels. If you're confused about what foods to choose, you'll struggle to meet your nutrition goals. To enable you to purchase the best foods for you and your family, Fairfax Dietetics offers group and individual grocery shopping tours in the Northern Virginia area. Plus we'll meet you at the grocery store where you usually shop.

What’s In A Food Label? Learn how the grocery store layout is designed to stimulate shopping and encourage impulse buying. Aisle by aisle, we'll tour the store and teach you how to become a savvy food consumer. You'll learn how to read The Nutrition Facts Panel, to distinguish between legitimate and unqualified health claims on a food label, to recognize what the ingredient names really mean, and to know which foods are best to buy organic. We'll teach you how to select the right foods to meet your nutritional goals and those of your family.

Here’s a tip: Do we need to calculate percentages to use the %DV-Daily Value? No, the label (the %DV) does the math for you. It helps you interpret the numbers (grams and milligrams) by putting them all on the same scale for the day (0-100%DV). Each nutrient is based on 100% of the daily requirements for that nutrient (for a 2,000 calorie diet). This way you can tell high from low and know which nutrients contribute a lot, or a little, to your daily recommended allowance. In the United States, these labels were developed to provide us with the daily recommended intake for the average American.
