Weight Loss Management
Why is a healthy weight important?
Weight loss is about so much more than how you look. Reaching and maintaining an appropriate weight is essential for overall health and can prevent and control some diseases. A high body weight increases your risk of developing chronic health problems such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and certain cancers. An appropriate weight for your height and body composition can reduce your risk of developing these disorders. Plus you’ll feel good about yourself and have the energy to enjoy life. We make the weight loss process less of a challenge as we help you find pleasure in the changes you make in your lifestyle, your nutrition and your health.
Over our years of weight loss counseling, we’ve come to realize that each client requires a unique weight loss plan. There is not one plan that is ideal for all. Therefore, we offer 2 types of weight loss services – traditional nutrition counseling and a medical weight loss program. We’ll help you determine which plan will work better for you.
Do I need a Diabetes Meal Plan?
Perhaps your doctor has told you that you have "pre-diabetes," or maybe you are dealing with type 2 diabetes already and even taking medication to control your blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes is often caused by being overweight. Extra weight, especially in the abdominal area, decreases the ability of insulin to move sugar from the blood stream into the cells or causes the body to not produce as much insulin as needed which results in a condition called impaired glucose tolerance. Losing weight can reverse these effects and allows the body to better metabolize sugar.
Just a 10% weight loss can help reduce your diabetes risk. Findings from the Diabetes Prevention Program showed that diet and exercise can effectively delay diabetes in overweight persons with impaired glucose tolerance by 58%. (www.preventdiabetes.com, August 8, 2001). If you already have type 2 diabetes, healthy nutrition and exercise habits can cut your reliance on medication, increase your energy level and improve your overall health.
Fairfax Dietetics can help you manage your weight and blood sugar levels and also enjoy eating without putting your health at risk.
Dietary Cholesterol vs. Blood Cholesterol – What's the deal?
Many of our clients are referred by their doctor because of high cholesterol or triglyceride levels. If left untreated high cholesterol or triglycerides, which are fatty substances in the blood, can lead to blocked arteries which can then cause heart attack and stroke. High blood fat levels can be caused by genetics, other medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes and hypothyroidism and even some medications. Poor eating habits, excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to this problem as well.
Regardless of whether your doctor has recommended medication to control your levels, dietary changes, achieving a healthy weight and routine exercise are part of the treatment. At Fairfax Dietetics, we're very experienced with helping clients make lifestyle changes to control high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. We'll work with you and your physician to put you on the road to wellness.
Diagnosed with Hypertension - What does this mean?
This is the technical term for High Blood Pressure which affects 1 in 3 American adults. Blood pressure is the measure of the force of blood pushing against artery walls as it circulates through the body. If it stays high for too long, it may eventually cause heart disease or stroke, the first and third leading causes of death in the US.
To reduce blood pressure levels, Fairfax Dietetics offers counseling for lifestyle changes to achieve weight loss, healthy eating habits, and more physical activity. We can succeed in "taking the pressure off" helping you live longer and avoid heart disease, kidney damage and other issues.
Folate and Folic Acid - What are these and do I need them? YES! Supporting your baby's development with a healthy prenatal diet is probably one of the most important things you can do when you are expecting!
Folate is a B vitamin. It assists in the prevention of neural defects, abnormalities of the brain, spine and spinal cord. Lack of Folate increases the risk of low birth weight. The recommended consumption is 600mg a day BEFORE conception, because neural defects occur in the first month of pregnancy often before a women knows that she is pregnant, and throughout the pregnancy. Fairfax Dietetics offers meal planning and prenatal nutritional counseling to help you achieve the daily nutrient requirements for the development and growth of your newborn.
From types of foods with folic acid content to serving sizes to control weight gain, we make a balanced prenatal diet easy to plan and learn. We'll include a variety of foods you like and perhaps suggest some foods you should try. Our goal is to work together and to provide a healthy outcome for both you and your newborn. If you are considering pregnancy or are already pregnant, please make an appointment with us to discuss your needs. Physician referrals are accepted.

Ready to get fit? Or are you an Athlete in training?
Your Body is your Responsibility. As an Athlete, only you can be responsible for what you ingest. Learn how to make more effective and proper meal choices by consulting Fairfax Dietetics. All Sports Diets are NOT created equal. Information on sports nutrition is easy to find on the web and in magazines but not all information is accurate or healthful. In fact, the long term effects of inappropriate nutrition information may be harmful. Before you start training or start an exercise program it's a good idea to make an appointment to discuss your goals.
Regardless of whether your activity level is competitive or recreational, physical activity puts increased demands on your body. You need more energy, lose more body fluids, and put extra stress on your muscles, joints and bones. What, when and how much you eat and drink can increase your stamina and help prevent dehydration and injury. In addition, a healthy diet helps you feel good and contributes to a positive "mental edge."

Why should I have metabolic testing?
Knowing your metabolic rate, or how many calories your body uses at rest, can provide essential information for successful weight loss, especially if your weight loss efforts have stalled. If you know your metabolic rate, you can pinpoint the number of calories that you need to meet your body’s metabolic needs but still allow for weight loss. This eliminates a common mistake that many individuals make which is drastically restricting their caloric intake with resulting hunger, tiredness and an imbalanced diet that can’t be sustained. By testing your metabolic rate, we know how to create the best, most personalized treatment. Eating a healthy diet with the right amount of calories can keep you feeling positive and result in a successful experience.
The test is only available at the Arlington office. It is a simple 10 minute breath test. The results are based on the measured amount of oxygen that your body uses during the testing period. You’ll get a real calorie number, not estimated, for real results.
